Why the divorce rate is skyrocketing among older couples

On Behalf of | Aug 14, 2021 | Divorce |

It may be a surprise to learn that more and more spouses these days are choosing to stay together. As a whole, the divorce rate in Maryland and across the United States is declining. However, for spouses over the age of 50, the rate of divorce is skyrocketing. But why is gray divorce becoming so prevalent today?

Stigmas surrounding divorce are changing

It’s no secret that today’s society is far more progressive than in past decades. Many of the stigmas that once surrounded divorce are no longer there and general attitudes toward divorce are more relaxed these days. Since it is easier to walk away, many spouses are choosing to finally end their unhappy marriages.

Increased life expectancies

Thanks to advancements in medical technology and a more health-conscious society, people are living longer these days. On average, a 55-year-old adult has another 30 years left to live, possibly more. It seems those who are in unhappy marriages are questioning whether they can stick it out for three more decades.

Empty nest

Many spouses stay in the marriage for the children. Even if the marriage is empty and unfulfilled, spouses hold it together to set an example for the kids. However, once the children are grown and living lives of their own, older spouses may have no reason to stay together.

Although the dissolution of a marriage can be challenging, those who divorce later in life can look at this event as an opportunity to pursue new hobbies and try things they’ve always wanted to do. For any individual in Maryland who has questions about divorce, discussions with a knowledgeable lawyer can prove invaluable. An experienced family law attorney can provide clarity and much-needed legal guidance throughout the process.
