Prenuptial agreements could be good for any marriage

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2021 | Family Law |

It goes without saying that spouses never marry with the intent of one day divorcing. However just under half of all marriages in Maryland and across the United States end up dissolving. If something had nearly a 50% chance of happening, wouldn’t it make sense to prepare in advance? This is exactly what prenuptial agreements do. Here are some reasons why a prenuptial agreement can benefit every marriage.

Protection

Dividing property and assets is one of the most contentious parts of the divorce process. Many couples disagree on who gets what. A prenuptial agreement can allow couples to specify what property and assets each spouse owns and keeps in the event of divorce. Prenups are very helpful when a spouse has family heirlooms that he or she wishes to keep separate.

Saves money and time

Divorce is notoriously expensive and often time-consuming. Even if spouses agree on legal issues in the divorce, they may still end up spending large amounts of money in court costs and legal fees before the divorce is finalized. However, if a couple has a prenuptial agreement, they can address the legal hurdles that are common in divorce. A prenuptial agreement offers the benefit of a quick divorce resolution and can help spouses avoid going to court.

Divorce is one of life’s most challenging events. The experience of divorce can be even more difficult without the protection of a prenup. Without a prenuptial agreement, spouses could find themselves in arduous and expensive battles to fight for the things that they are entitled to. Those in Maryland who have questions about prenuptial agreements or any aspect of family law could obtain much-needed guidance by consulting with a knowledgeable and seasoned attorney.
