Slip-and-fall accidents are usually preventable

On Behalf of | Jul 8, 2024 | Personal Injury |

The most dangerous thing about slip-and-fall accidents is that they can happen to anyone at any time. Studies suggest that over 40 thousand people are killed in slip-and-fall accidents every year in the U.S.

This is why it’s so important to think about fall prevention. The reality is that most falls are preventable. Here are some safety protocols that should be considered.

Good housekeeping

Any building or public space that is open to visitors has a duty of care. Steps should be taken to prevent falls as much as possible. The starting point in fall prevention is good housekeeping. For example, floor areas in malls should be clean and dry. Stairways should be kept clear of clutter and trailing wires. The more clean and tidy a building is, the less likely falls occur.

Sometimes, slip-and-fall hazards are unavoidable. For example, a floor may need to be moped to clean up a spillage. In such instances, proper signage should be used. This alerts customers of the potential hazards so that they can avoid them.

Proper lighting

Some building owners make the mistake of choosing atmosphere or cost-saving over safety. Dim lighting can increase the ambiance in a restaurant, for example. However, it may put customers at risk of falling. One area that should never have dim lights is stairways. The risk of falling is just too great with dim lighting.

Slip-and-fall accidents result in millions of injuries every year. If you are one of the individuals who suffered in this type of accident, seek legal guidance to find out if you may be entitled to personal injury compensation.
