After a car accident, you may find that multiple areas of your life have changed. You may have painful physical injuries, and you may have significant emotional distress that comes from going through a traumatic event. The extent of your injuries may not be immediately known, but there may be signs that something serious is going on. For example, if you suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident, you may find that the signs and symptoms become more evident as days go by.

Brain injuries are complex, and each person may experience the implications of this type of event differently. It is important to pay attention to your body and seek medical treatment if necessary. If you are suffering because of the negligent or reckless actions of another Maryland driver, you will benefit from also seeking an understanding of the legal options available to you.

The ways a TBI can impact your life

A traumatic brain injury occurs when a forceful impact, such as one from a car accident, causes the brain to shift or results in a direct blow to the brain. These types of injuries can range from minor, which can resolve themselves in a few days or weeks, to the severe, which can lead to permanent damage and debilitation. A TBI can result in physical, sensory and cognitive issues, and some of the symptoms of these include:

  • Memory loss
  • Lingering headaches
  • Problems with speech
  • Difficulty balancing
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Mood changes or swings
  • Feelings of depression or anxiety

With moderate to severe TBIs, these symptoms may not get better or resolve over time. If you have a serious TBI, you may require extensive medical help and other types of support. There are times when a TBI is severe to the point where it causes permanent damage that can severely limit one’s quality of life.

Navigating the aftermath

After a serious car accident, there are options available to you. If the crash that caused your TBI was the fault of another person or party, you may have grounds to pursue recovery through a civil claim. This option may allow you to secure financial recovery and have access to what you need to get better and move forward after this type of event.
